Written by Shannon Kirkpatrick
Evening of excellence is an evening showcasing the hard work of many students from the North Syracuse Junior High in many areas, including photography, art, science, academics, poetry & public speaking, cooking, technology and much more. Any people from the community are welcome to attend this event and support these students. Even more, from 5-7 there will be a spaghetti dinner being hosted for $5/child and $7/adult. From 5:30-8:30, students will be having live presentations all throughout the building, from literary performances, to 3D printing, to student produced videos and photography, to exciting science demos and more!
Out of over 120 student entries, NSJH student, Tori Jantsch, won the school wide graphic design contest. Her design for 2016's Evening of Excellence t-shirt rose to the top amongst many of her peers' work as winner. As well as the winner, there were six great finalists in the contest, all of who should be mentioned for such great work.

silence over the rainbow
Written by Sarah Herter
In the upcoming week and especially this Friday, the 15th, you might notice something: rainbow ribbons on people’s shirts, somebody you know might not be talking on Friday, you might even see people with little cards talking about the “Day of Silence.” So what is that you ask? The Day of Silence is an event being brought to our school by the high School’s Gay Straight Alliance or GSA. This event shows support for the LGBTQ etc. community by not speaking to show how many people from this community feel alone and as if they don’t have a voice. It helps to raise awareness that many people face discrimination even today.

how young is too young?
Written by Molly Dano
Social Media. Something that many teens our age cannot live without. However, as times start to change and technology advances, kids start getting cell phones at younger and younger ages. And, with cell phones, comes an endless world of different social media networks that kids can join for free. The question that looms in the back of many parents and other people’s minds is how young is too young to be on social media.
I did not get a smart phone until sixth grade, until I was twelve. Before then, I had phones that I could call and text my parents on, and that was it, but I didn't have the freedom of having a smart phone. However, I am thankful that my parents did that. I feel that if I had gotten a smart phone earlier, I would be a much different person than who I am today, in a negative way. When I finally did get a smart phone, I was very careful while using social media- I didn't give out any personal information, and I didn't really talk to anybody that I didn't know in real life. However, I do believe that social media has gotten me out of my shell. I use social media to share my writing with others, and to share my interests with people who have those of similar interests. I have gotten to know many great people over the Internet that understand me and my interests more than any people that I know personally do.
There are obvious dangers of heading into the world of social media when you are too young and naïve. People can generally get pulled into fake schemes and other things that loom on the Internet the younger they are. With the combination of that and Internet predators, the Internet and social media can be a dangerous place if you aren't informed and participating safely. It's up to parents when they will allow their child to participate in social media, but, in my mind, for the safety of children, they shouldn't be on social media until they are old enough to understand the dangers, which can be different for every child.

science olympiad competition 2016, a success
Written by Molly Dano
This past weekend, the NSJH Science Olympiad teams competed in the Regional Competition, which is the first tier of competition. Every single member of the team worked hard and made their best effort in the competition, with either or both teams placing in almost every single event! It was most definitely an exciting and fun event for all. Overall, the B team came in seventh place and the A team came in 3rd place, which sends the A team off to the State Competition. This marks two years in a row that a team from NSJH is going to States, with last year being the first time in over ten years that a team went to States. Our school was one of the only schools with both teams placing in the top ten, which is a very impressive feat considering the competition that the teams were up against. Great job to everyone that competed, and good luck to the A team at their State Competition!

The new year is here
Written by Molly Dano
2015 has come and gone, and now it is the New Year. You might associate the New Year with resolutions, with goals, with reinventing yourself. All of these things may sound intimidating, so much that you might not even want to even attempt to participate. However, the New Year can just be an opportunity for you to do better, to be better.
You may look back on the things you did in 2015. Things you did well, such as tests you earned good grades on, sports games you or your team won, or things you wish you did better on, like essays that you rushed, or other things that you really didn’t put your all into.
Maybe in 2016, you can try harder on your schoolwork, decrease your procrastinating behaviors, or study more when you have a big test coming up. You could also make goals for yourself, such as what grade you want to get on a certain assignment, or what you want to accomplish in the upcoming year, such as championships you want to win or get to, or maybe how many books you want to read.
The New Year can be a time for change. Take advantage of that time; because you never know what opportunities or events could happen in the next year.

Finding yourself
Written by Molly Dano
Once you reach your teenage years, it can be hard to find your place, to find what you want to do. For most, there is constant unwanted influence and judgement from friends, family, and teachers. Most of the time, if you want to be happy in what you are doing, you can’t let the outside influence get to you; you have to decide what you want to do on your own.
There is, of course, exception to this. A parent might push you to do an activity that you’re on the fence about, and you may end up having a great time doing said activity. There is always that possibility. However, that’s all it is, a possibility. If someone is pushing you to do something, you may not enjoy that activity as much as you could have if you went into it on your own accord.
This isn’t only applicable to extra-curricular activities; it also involves your future. My parents are always trying to push me into be a scientist, pushing me to go to a local college, while I want to be a writer, and go to a college in New York City. I know that I won’t be happy following my parent’s path for me. I would be miserable, to say the least.
The bottom line is- don’t let anyone decide your dreams for you. You won’t be happy living like that. You shouldn’t be forced to be a follower if you were really meant to be a leader, you shouldn’t be forced to be a scientist if you want to be a writer, and you shouldn’t listen to anyone that won’t allow you to follow your dreams.
Don’t let anyone decide your dreams for you.

SHould School Start Later In The Morning?
Written by Molly Niles
Almost every week, except for summer and a few other days, you have to wake up and go to school. A lot of students hate getting up so early and are very tired at school. There are many opinions on this topic, like if school should start later or should it stay the same.
Some people think school should start later because students aren’t fully awake so early in the morning. Studies have shown that your brain doesn’t fully work until 10:00 and school should start around then. Teacher hate when kids are falling asleep when they are teaching. Teachers have to come early in the morning to and it isn’t fun when nobody is paying attention. Students are trying not to fall asleep during their first class and some even have a test right away. If school was later kids would do better on test and get better grades. If students get better grades, then they will get into a better college and get a better job. Students get stressed because of how little sleep they are getting. Kids have went to drugs to stop getting so stressed. Society make fun of drug addicts, when sometimes it’s caused by their own doing. All you have to do to stop all of this is make school start later.
Other people think school is fine that way it is because teens would take advantage of their extra time by partying and watching TV. They could be using their extra time for sleeping and studying. It is also a good practice for adult life. Most adults have to wake up early and go to work. When adults are late for work they are fired or their pay is cut. If we can get teens ready for life after school, more people will be successful. Also, this could affect things that happen in kids and teachers lives after school, like sports. It could also mess with the bus drivers schedule. Bus drivers have to drive kids to different schools, not just one. If students get to bed at about 9:30 then they will get the fun 8 hours they need. There is no reason to start school later.
School affects everyone, not just the students. If you change something as simple as the time than it could cause everything to change, or it might just help students. This is the question many people are wondering. Help kids by making school later or don’t risk it and keep things the way they are. What would you pick?

Reading - A Universal Language
Written by Molly Dano
If you ask me, reading and literature are beautiful things. Random people write down words that form a story, and for a while they try to get it out into the world, and when they do, people from all over the world come to read and enjoy it. Reading is, in a way, a universal language.
Reading can open realms of possibility. Books can expose you to worlds that you never thought you could ever experience, they can bring you on adventures that you would never thought were possible. Books can make you happy or make you cry. And people all over the world can be experiencing the same things that you are because of the same piece of literature.
Books can be translated into many different languages around the globe. Everyone, everywhere, can experience the same books as everyone else. Reading is an escape that people, no matter where they are, can dive into.
Reading is the universal language and interest. Reading can connect people from all over the world to each other. Books can simply bring many different people together.

School Budget Priorities
Written by Molly Dano
I am passionate about a number of things, but, at the top of that list lies only a few things that are very important to me. One of those things is Science Olympiad. Science Olympiad gives kids that are more into academics than other things a chance to learn and comepete about what they have learned.
I was on the Science Olympiad team that advanced to the State competition, which is where all of the regional champions from all over New York State compete to go to nationals. However, with us going to states, I realized an issue. We were only given funds when we went to states, not regionals (which was much farther away), because we are cut from the school/ district budget. We shouldn’t have to fundraise to the degree that we currently have to, even though we are capable of doing so.
In my opinion, the district should split funds equally between sports, the arts, and other clubs. If they can’t do it equally, it should at least be at an even ratio, the amount of money depending on the size of whatever it is covering. Also, students (maybe just the older ones) should be able to have a say in where the money goes, instead of parents who predominantly have children in sports.
Think about it. Clubs should be supported equally by the school district, financially and in spirit.

Science Olympiad Ends Another Terrific Season
Written by Shannon Kirkpatrick
Now WHAT is Science Olympiad? Maybe you have heard about it on the announcements in school or on the school website, or maybe you heard it from a person on the team. A friend might have come telling you how Team Pluto of NSJH went to the States competition this. But what were they talking about?
Science Olympiad is where a team of young people with interests in any kind of science go as a team to compete with other schools on science related subjects. At the beginning, with a partner or two, events, or the topics being competed, are chosen. Anything from meteorology to chemistry to bridge building is included in this amazing club. During the club, the team become friends and learns to work well together to win at the competition. But, it takes the dedication of all team members… but it pays off! Just recently, Team Pluto, one of the two NSJH teams, competed and got 3rd place in regionals, taking them to the NY State Science Olympiad competition.
It starts with the announcement in the beginning of the year, calling any 8th or 9th graders. Some people don’t know what it is, or maybe don’t go to the meeting because they think they aren’t smart or "sciency" enough. Nope, no smarts needed, but it needs some interest in the topic and dedication. Events are picked; it could be a building event where you build something before competition or a simple event. I mean, if you can work hard, there is building a robot! Not all events are completely science either. There is one event called “Write it, Do it” where two partners work. One partner comes into competition alone to look at a complicated, already built structure made out of Legos, rubber bands… anything really. Then the other partner comes in alone and the structure is taken apart and, following their partner’s instructions must reconstruct it as close to the original as possible.
Science Olympiad is an amazing club with so many fun people in it to work on pure science, all led by an awesome Earth Science teacher, Mrs. Kormanec and amazing Living Environment teacher, Mrs. LaChance. However, the club was recently cut from the school budget making the club being able to continue hard. If you know anyone, a company, or are willing yourself, donations are extremely accepted. Help spread the word about Science Olympiad at NSJH and maybe you know someone who would love it or maybe like to donate to it. If you have the determination, Science Olympiad is a great club that gives you the ultimate experience.

Don't Judge a Book by it's Movie
Written by Emily Temple
Have you ever seen a movie, and thought it was bad? You thought it was so bad you didn’t want to read the book. Or maybe you read the book but the movie was terrible (cough, cough, Percy Jackson), and a whole bunch of things happened unrelated to the book. Maybe it was a rare occurrence and the book to movie was spot on! (Cough, cough, Catching Fire). All of these are factors in the way books are perceived.
Whether you like it in writing or on the big screen is up to you. When authors write a book, they are writing it of pure imagination, or maybe it’s based off real life, but they aren’t imagining it to be a movie, if a director wants to make it a movie, they can. Then of course there’s the whole thing with signing over the rights of the book to the director, which basically makes it so they can do whatever they want. No matter how many times you complain to the author and express opinions such as “Why did you let them do that?” or “Why didn`t you write the script”, the author can`t really do anything.
Now, it`s not to say that all movies are horrible in relation to the book, some may be, others are in the middle, and some are nearly perfect. In many cases, certain actions in the book cannot be produced on the big screens. Those particular scenes may not be possible, or may cost too much money to film. Money is a big factor in the production industry. Many producers may exaggerate a scene to make it more entertaining. There`s always the never ending “I think the cast should`ve been different.”, but you can`t please everyone.
Overall, books and movies are great sources of entertainment. Though a book-to-movie production may not always be accurate, it sure does give publicity to the book. Not everything in a movie can be 100% accurate some movies would end up being hours and hours long. So maybe next time you watch a movie that was originally from a book, considering reading the book. You never know, the book could easily be better. Or maybe the opposite, the movie could be better, but you will never know

Dreams Will Come True
Written by Molly Dano
For our whole school career, we are told that all of our dreams will come true if we try our hardest towards that goal. However, once we reach the higher grades we are told by our guidance counselor that being an actress or singer is not a career that they can put on a sheet that says ‘Career Interests’ or our parents indirectly talk to our family members about what THEY want us to be when we grow up.
They do have some point, as going into one of these careers are risky business, but again, these careers can be reached through hard work and perseverance, like any other career. However, I, as someone who knows exactly what they want to do (a writer) and where they want to go to college, and where I want to live, it’s hard for me to hear people saying “You need a backup plan”, because there is really nothing else I am as passionate about.
I don’t want to be stuck in career that I’m not passionate about, and I’m sure a lot of other people our age feel this same way. I am determined to not give in to what the adults around us want us to do. Our generation is full of people who are willing to do anything they can to do what they love, and I will stand up and be one of those people. I will not tolerate anyone choosing my dreams for me.

Fandoms and Fangirls: An inside perspective
Written by Molly Dano
Fandoms. A group of people who love a certain thing a lot (maybe way too much), known as fangirls and fanboys. As one of these people, sitting here in a shirt that says “Professional Fangirl” while typing this, I understand the feeling. The feeling of loving something so dearly for whatever reason, whether it saved your life or it being interesting to you, whatever.
Some people think that being in fandoms is weird or obsessive. They simply don’t understand that these TV shows, books, bands, plays, or famous people in general mean so much to people. I see fandoms and fangirls as another clique at school, like the athletes and popular people. These things can save someone’s life, get them out of depression, make them smile when they’ve had a bad day, or whatever else. I see it as a great passion for something you love, and sharing that passion with other people, whether it’s through fanfiction, posts on Tumblr, or binge-watching Netflix or Youtube. New media has given fandoms new ways to share their passion with world in a way that traditional media hadn’t before.
I think being in fandoms and being passionate for something is a great way to get out of your shell and make friends, as it has for me. And the last thing, if you love something a lot, don’t hide it. It could change your life drastically for the better.

What are the pros and cons of homeschooling?
Written by Shannon Kirkpatrick
Homeschool and public school are two very different matters, both having their pros and cons. Many people are divided in this as they believe with homeschooling, students are allowed more freedom and can help student develop unique skills according to their personality. On the other hand, public schooling helps student develop certain skills like organization and responsibility. Public schools can offer better supplies, but some types of people don’t learn as well in large classes.
As some people think, homeschooling can offer a better education to some. This is true; for some people. Many people can learn much better when it is a one on one learning in a place they are most comfortable; home. But there are other people who prefer to learn in groups, where they can socialize throughout the day and compare work to see other opinions. Furthermore, homeschooling gives students a little more freedom. When being homeschooled, there isn’t the major problem we have today in public schools about students not getting enough sleep. In homeschool, students get up for their classes at an average time of about 8:30AM. There is the choice between having a tutor and doing classes online. Even more, as a homeschooler, a student would be able to advance quicker in school. Finally there is the topic that people think that homeschoolers don’t have many friends. True, they don’t meet as many kinds of people but homeschoolers still have a life outside of learning at home and sometimes even take classes around universities in the higher grades. More freedom is something that many students would love to have and it does sound very great for a lot of them; more sleep, a little more relaxed, and more spread out classes.
Sometimes, students tend to learn better in large classes, where they can work with friends. Also, some students like learning in larger groups where they can hear the outlooks of other students on topics. However, many students face problems like not being able sleep long enough because they might have been studying late into the night for a big test. Homeschooling can offer a more relaxed environment and offer better learning tools for those students that prefer one on one teaching. If you ask students that go to public school, the majority say that they would love more freedom. But, sometimes too much freedom might be bad. For example, some public schools are strict but they also teach students responsibility, respectfulness, and sportsmanship.
With two very different types of schooling, this offers different ways of teaching for different people. Learning in an environment where a student can learn at their best and feel comfortable is optimum.

Cell Phones in School: A Tool or a Distraction?
Written by Shannon Kirkpatrick
For many years there has been the constant quarrel of whether or not cell phones should be allowed to be used during school hours. Some believe it is a major distraction to students and also aids in students cheating on exams by texting friends and looking up answers. Others take the side that, if controlled, phones can improve knowledge on how to use these properly and used to help educate students in a way some are more comfortable with.
One side to the topic is that cell phones should not be allowed in school and should be turned off and stowed in the student’s locker. Many teachers agree with this as they have experienced students, even with strict rules, using their phone during school and using it as a distraction for the user and other peers around. One diligent student that goes to NSJH says "I think cell phones are a distraction and should not be allowed in class." Even more, some parents claim that if schools allow cell phones, they could be allowing cyber bullying to increase.
However, other people think with having cell phones accessible to students, if controlled, the use of phones can help provide a new way of learning and possibly even improve the way some students learn. "I personally think we should be able to carry our phones around the school and use it properly for like music or the utilities built into the phone" as one student that goes to NHJS says "but be restricted from texting friends and taking advantage of having phones during school." A few schools around the US are starting to allow phones and other things be allowed into classes. For example, Mason High School near Cincinnati now will let students bring their phones and other devices to classes.
With these two sides with countless reasons for both, most schools have banned the use of cell phones during school hours. But, sometimes people just need to be proven right or wrong weather or not students can handle the responsibility.

Bullying: Think before you speak
Written by Emily Temple
One of the most controversial issues in the world centered around the media and school systems is bullying. Both bullying and cyber bullying are the same, just in different locations. It's a truly cruel factor in today's society. The government claims to have taken actions on this, but is it enough?
Technology is such a huge part of our everyday lives. Social networking sights such as Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and YouTube, make it easy to make an account. It's free. and you can lie about who you are. You can lie about your age, your name, where you live, anything. No one will know who's behind the screen. That's why it's such a big part of cyber bullying. You can say anything you want and you can hide behind that account you made. Most of the time people will never know who people actually are on the internet.
Bullying in school systems still happens. Multiple students have been asked what teachers have done about it. Many have said there wasn't anything really done about it. We think there are actions taken upon this, but in reality, there's little to nothing done. That needs to change. Kids need to know that it's not okay. It's not okay to make someone feel bad about themself. It's not okay to make someone feel like they're being judged, or that they can't be themself. They need to know that it's not okaay, and if they don't then what's really stopping them?
Everyone needs to realize that words hurt. You don't know what goes on at someone's home. You don't know what's already been said to them, or if they're at their breaking point. Whether you mean what you say to someone or not, it doesn't matter. Especially in adolescents, bullying can lead to suicide. It's a very serious topic that should be taken seriously. You do not tell someone to "Go kill themselves!" It's not right, it's inhumane, cruel, you name it. It can't be stressed enough- this isn't acceptable. The one time you say that to someone, online or in person, they might already be at the edge. You would have just pushed them over it. You have to think before you say something. Think about the aftermath of your words.
The golden rule "Treat others the way you would like to be treated," has meaning. Don't bully someone if you wouldn't want to be bullied in return. If you've seen someone being bullied, stand up for them! Tell someone, tell a teacher, another friend, your parents, their parents, just tell somene. Someone will be able to help. To those that are being bullied: you are not alone. There are plenty of people who have been bullied. Kids and teens should be able to have a good time in school and on the internet without getting hateful things said to them. Overall, bullying needs to stop, it's hurting evryone in the long-run. So, think before you say something. Bullying may never truly go away but it can certainly get better. Think before you act, one simple action could hurt someone or help someone, remember that.

Equality- The Evolution
Written by Molly Dano
It has been 84 years since women got the right to vote. It has been 50 years since the end of the civil rights movement. After these events, everyone thought that the problem of inequality was solved. However, that is obviously untrue, as there is prejudice going on everywhere in the world, even though these problems were solved.
In Russia, the act of simple love is being descriminated against. In Russia, members of the LGBT community are prosecuted for being gay. They arent allowed to love. They can’t hold hands with their partners, they can’t kiss, and they aren’t allowed to marry. They are denied basic rights as citizens and it is wrong. In other countries around the world, there is inequaility for many people. In the USA, many things have recently brought out the lack of equaility for people of different race. These things need to be stopped, just as much as world hunger and poverty and everything else that is wrong in the world.
Comaraderie, friendship, trust, love. These things know no gender, color, race, shape, size. Whatever put us here, whatever it was, put us here for us to collaborate and work together so we could have the human race live out, as well as have the Earth survive. We need to work for equality to become a reality. We can’t sit back any longer.
