2016-2017 Scholastic Art Gallery
Students at the North Syracuse Junior High studied photography and focused on portraiture and the elements of design. In doing this, they chose their best works and submitted them to the New York State Art & Writing Competition. Forty-three of our ninth grade students took home awards. But before we honor the students who received awards, we should try to thoroughly understand what exactly the Art & Writing Awards is.
According to the founder of the Awards Maurice R. Robinson, their purpose is to “...give those high school students who demonstrate superior talent and achievement in things of the spirit and of the mind at least a fraction of the honors and rewards accorded to their athletic classmates for demonstrating their bodily skills.” In other words, the purpose of the organization, established in 1923, is to recognize teens’ artistic talent and encourage them to continue being creative and possibly take up careers in those creative categories.
